These Biblical Characters Come to Life as Jonah, his betrothed, Naomi, and his friend Amos suffer the decline of their nation, the politics of fearsome battling kings, and an uncertain future. Feel Jonah’s love for Naomi, the young woman he’s about to marry as he’s sent by God to a dreaded city in a far-away country. And Naomi, who never stops trusting God as she searches for her beloved Jonah. This historical novel takes you on a miracle-filled journey over 500 war-torn miles. Follow Jonah from his home in Israel into the whale’s belly and through the gates of the dreaded Assyrian city of Nineveh. Above all, ‘Jonah In the Time of the Kings’ reveals the very heart of God and his love for all people through the story of one of his most flawed yet faithful prophets in the Bible. “Anthony Barbera’s carefully researched novel illuminates one of the Bible’s most remarkable stories of transformation. Barbera fills in the details with a moving and inspiring portrait of Jonah, a prophet who lived in a time shockingly similar to our own.”

This book is a work of fiction, based on the book of Jonah which is 4 chapters (about 15 pages), a verse in 2Kings 14:25 and the short book of prophet Amos. Author has compiled a great novel that brings us in the midst of cruel Assyrians (inhabitants of Nineveh - in today's northern Iraq) which conquer ancient Syrians that in turn want to invade divided Israel and Judea. This book is a great read and I recommend it to anyone who want to tap his toes in the time of Jonah. However, I would not recommend this book to a very young audience, due to the war scenes. It's a sad "coincidence" that today we face the same cruel scenes in the same location of ancient Nineveh. Will there be today's Jonah that will go to northern Iraq or Syria to preach repentance? My only complain about this book is that the author insists on using the title "prayer house" (instead of synagogue), which sounds unnatural and denotes the word "church" (i.e. western protestant church). At one point protagonists bring their first fruits offerings to the town's "prayer house" in Wednesday and Sunday. Now that crosses the acceptable line. If author is interested, there are books (i.e.  The Jewish Gospel of John: Discovering Jesus, King of All Israel ) that explain ancient synagogues as something more than a "prayer house" or a "church" as we know it today.
